Eating out is a popular activity, and with the growth of disposable income, it is going to become more popular. So a culinary career is a good option, with lots of opportunities to create and build a career during the years ahead.
There are a wide variety of culinary career options to choose from in the world of Culinary Arts. From careers as a Chef or Cook, to careers in Hotel or Resort Management, to careers in Restaurant and Food Service Management, the culinary arts offer many choices.
Cooking Careers
Those interested in a culinary career as a chef or a cook have many options and specialties to choose from. The roles available to you include: Executive Chef, Sous-Chef, Saucier, Garde Manger, Pastry Chef and Sommelier.

The Executive Chef is the leader in the kitchen. They typically oversee the food preparation and cooking and set the standards for one or many restaurants. They also develop the menu and supervise the other chefs, cooks, and other kitchen staff. They may cook on a regular basis or just for special occations.
Sous-Chef is number 2 in the kitchen. They manage the work of other chefs in a large establshment and do much of the cooking in a smaller establishment. They implement the Executive Chefs plans.
Saucier specializes in the creation of sauces and dishes that rely heavily on sauces. They are experts on mixing just the right ingredients to create the perfect sauce for a dish.
Garde Manger specializes in the creation of cold dishes. This will often include starters, salads, sandwiches and desserts.
Pastry Chef, as the name implies, specializes in baking pastries and desserts.
Sommelier, is the final word on wine. They will usually design the wine list to fit the menu and may be available to make wine recommendations to customers.
Hotel or Resort Management
Hotels, motels and resorts offer a wide variety of management positions, from reservations managers, to event managers to hospitality and convention managers.
In most establishments, the top manager is the General Manager. All other managers will report to him/her. The General Manager is responsible for the budgets and operations of the facility. The General Manager also sets standards and oversees the operations.
The are many other management positions at most hotels and resorts including:

Resident Manager - who generally oversee guest related issues
Front Office Manager - who manages the front desk
Executive Housekeeper - who manages the guest and public room maintenance and upkeep.
Convention Service Manager - who manages special events, banquets and conventions.
Restaurant and Food Service Management
The Restaurant and Food Service Manager often works hand in hand with the Executive Chef in managing the back office activities that make a restaurant run smoothly. They will oversee the hiring and firing of staff. They may assist with the menu planning and pricing. They estimate the expected number of customers and oversee the ordering of supplies. They may oversee the preperation and the presentation of meals. They plan the staffing. They also oversee all of the general administration for the operation including payroll, purchasing, etc.
